I may have pointed out in another comment in this “Forum” section that many films which Chaiflicks streams are only tangentially related to Judaism, with the fact that a character is Jewish or the film (or series) takes place in Israel being not the main reason to see it. (Take, for example the hilarious series “Checkout”. Only those of here on Chaiflicks would know about it)
Well, last night I watched the new addition Hey, Hey, It's Esther Blueburger. And I thank Chaiflicks for making it available in the US for the first time. It’s not new – it’s from 2008 and was made for Netflix AUSTRALIA. But you’d never know it wasn’t made in 2021.
It’s quirky coming-of-age film about a 13 year old “ugly duckling” (who actually has a duckling as a pet!) who goes to a private school. I won’t tell you more so you can discover it the way I did.
The title character does get Bat Mitzvah’d and her family does Sabbath dinner, but that’s as Jewish as it gets.
Think of a film like Juno and you get the idea.
I have to say that the “icing on the cake” is the killer soundtrack of Australian pop hits that often play all the way through. I looked for the soundtrack album and it’s now a collector’s item (Darn! Guess I have to watch the film again!)
So a big shout out to ChaiFlicks for making films like this – that I’d never find anywhere else – available to subscribers of the channel.
