The daughter of African-American and Jewish parents, Courtenay wonders if she will ever find a mate, since she is “too black for Ashkenazi Jews and too Jewish for African-Americans.” She has always wanted to follow her father’s commitment as a former foster child and adopt foster children of her own. When she chooses to adopt a 9-month-old and raise her as a single mom, the experience is so joyful that she decides to adopt another child. She soon falls in love with baby Jake, but complications arise when his birth parents, in treatment for substance abuse, try to claim him. As the custody battle evolves, she learns heart-wrenching and deeply meaningful life lessons about parenthood.
